Even with the government shutdown expected to draw to a close this week, chaos at the airports is persisting, with the Federal Aviation Administration ordering airports to cancel 6% of flights on Tuesday and ramp that number up to 10% on Friday. TSA employees and air traffic controllers are considered essential workers – but while they were expected to work throughout the shutdown, they have not been paid, with air traffic controllers missing their second full paycheck on Tuesday. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said air traffic controllers could receive much of their back pay within 48 hours of the shutdown coming to an end. As he flew out of Wisconsin on Tuesday, Duffy also warned that the upcoming weekend had the potential to be even more chaotic than previous days.
