There were plenty of coronal mass ejections this week, but it was a very quiet period for solar flares. Most flares erupt from active regions — spots that appear brighter here, with swirling loops of solar material — so the flare count and the number of visible active regions are related. This week, there were very few active regions on the Earth-facing side of the Sun. Look how “bare” the Sun looks in the first minute of this video! More on flares & coronal mass ejections:
