This happens because the lunar ground isn’t flat, meaning objects sit on small slopes and uneven terrain, so their shadows fall onto surfaces angled differently. When a three-dimensional scene is captured in a two-dimensional photo, perspective also makes parallel shadows appear to diverge or converge, much like railroad tracks seeming to meet in the distance. The result is an optical illusion of “different directions,” not evidence of multiple light source.
