For Akira (1988), the team animated to pre-recorded dialogue, the reverse of the usual process. While most anime relied on limited animation, Akira broke the rule by animating on ones — 24 unique hand drawn frames per second. Neo Tokyo’s nights required 327 colors, 50 custom made — a technical landmark in animation history.
