Alan Rickman was born to play Severus Snape. We were spoiled rotten to grow up on films that causally featured world-class actors like Rickman and Kenneth Branagh. And while I’m not saying that another actor shouldn’t play Snape, I am saying that Rickman set the bar so high.

Alan Rickman wasn’t just cast as Severus Snape, he was personally requested by J.K. Rowling. To help shape his performance, Rowling privately revealed crucial details about Snape’s true motivations and backstory years before they were revealed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Rickman carried that knowledge through every film, adding layers to the character that audiences wouldn’t fully understand until the very end.

Alan Rickman plays the bad guy so well and the side character better than the main characters, regardless if it’s in Die Hard as the terrorist in Hans Gruber or even Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies or as Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood. . . . He’s always the best player on the field even though he is rarely the quarterback (so to speak) and usually playing the role of the villain.

The Harry Potter franchise took 10 years to build to this moment between Michael Gambon as Dumbledore and Alan Rickman as Snape. You could feel the energy & emotion in the packed theater throughout the entire last 1/3rd of this film. Why touch it? Why mess with what’s perfect?
