Hitchcock used an everyman protagonist in many of his movies, e.g., North by Northwest. It worked well in Enemy of the State, too.
Indiana jones was in the 80s and he is the star of a tv show that has a former military protagonist
Indiana Jones ran away from home as a teen to join Pancho Villa's army in Mexico. He later enlisted in the Belgian Army and French intelligence during World War I, fought at the Somme and Verdun, escaped a German POW camp, and served as a courier/spy in Germany and Africa.
