Alaskan brown bear mother and her cubs

The size difference between the mother and cubs is always stunning, but the biology behind it is even more SO. A brown bear's body has a biological 'pause' button. The embryo doesn't implant until months after mating, once she's in the den for winter. She then gives birth and produces some of the highest-fat milk on the planet, all while her own body is essentially in shutdown. It's one of the most incredible feats of metabolic engineering in the animal kingdom.
