Former MI6 Chief Richard Moore: Ending the war requires Putin’s desire to stop. There has never been any indication that he wants to end his war of aggression against Ukraine. We must lean in harder alongside Ukrainians to help them stop Russia from bombing defenseless civilians out of their apartments and homes, from destroying their energy infrastructure in the depths of winter. These are war crimes. And, somehow, we have all become a bit normalized to it. But every time you see that on your television, a war crime is happening right in front of us.

Because in his view, Europe has already declared war, just without saying it out loud. Poland is training its citizens for combat. Germany is calling up men as old as 60. He says, “I’m upset with NATO,” or “I’m upset with Nazis in Ukraine,” etc. And so we in the West say, “Well, maybe if we give him this or do that, or give him a little more of Ukraine, then he’ll calm down.” But it has nothing to do with what he wants. All he wants is to save his own skin. And to save his own skin, he needs to be in power. And to be in power, he needs this war. He wanted to prevent the enlargement of NATO. He got Finland and Sweden. He wanted to keep our defense expenditure down, and it's now going up to 5%. Secondly, he's losing on the military front. When the war began, Russia acquired 12% of Ukrainian territory. That's 12 years ago. Since then, 8%. In the past two years, 1%. In December, Ukraine was able to kill 34,000 Russian soldiers. They were not able to recruit back. Just keep on what you're doing, and at the end of the day, you will prevail and win this war.

They are us, and we're letting them down. It creates the likelihood of great wars. If we let Ukraine fall, you’re in. Anything’s possible. A lot of people were critical of me early on about Ukraine, saying, “If we escalate, Russians are going to use a nuclear weapon.” That’s possible any day with just loose nukes, forget about a state actor doing it, or if Pakistan sells something to somebody. You know, I’m sitting in United States of America. And I love it, and I love the dream of it. But we’re really shitting on ourselves.

It’s an extraordinarily insightful film that shows exactly how dictatorships sink their claws into institutions and use them to shape everyday life under their rule. It exposes the true depth and reach of Putin’s propaganda in Russian society. Countering propaganda is one of the most important parts of our work, and few films have done more in this fight than 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin.' Putin’s propaganda is a weapon, perhaps even more dangerous than nuclear arms. It is the fuel driving the war against Ukraine. This is a phenomenal achievement by Pavel Talankin, David Borenstein, and everyone else involved. I’m proud that one of my foundations supported the film's impact campaign and its awards and festival promotion, helping it reach the widest possible audience. Mr. Nobody Against Putin is one of the most important anti-war statements of our time. The Oscar and the BAFTA were both richly deserved.
