This week, DHS waived every one of our nation's most important environmental laws to bulldoze new border barriers and roads through Big Bend National Park. This marks the first time in U.S. history these laws have been waived in a national park. With these laws gutted and a $1.7 billion construction contract already issued, very little stands in the way of DHS contractors plowing into the park, permanently destroying countless archeological sites, blocking off river access and turning this peaceful national park into an industrial construction zone. CBP is pausing all construction activity in Big Bend National Park while I visit and conduct a personal, on-the-ground evaluation. CBP is firmly committed to protecting America, and that includes our national treasures like Big Bend National Park (BBNP). We know the current and predictable national security threats and they are real. Now over the next couple of days, I will join a small team to evaluate the terrain and listen to local leadership, community members and stakeholders to ensure that we secure our borders while simultaneously protecting BBNP for generations to come.

This is today, Saturday 10th January 2026 at Watamu Park. If this is not outright impunity then what is it? In open defiance of a court order, government related operatives are moving on with the destruction of Watamu Park in broad daylight and are proceeding with construction plans. If the state itself does not respect the laws of the land and court orders, what are we Kenyans supposed to do???
