the main reason fentanyl exploded across the country is that we criminalized heroin. Fernando is a Columbia University anthropologist studying drug supply. Fentanyl is easier to conceal and smuggle. Now, with fentanyl being criminalized, xylazine, which can be found in a veterinarian's office, is spreading across the country. I am not for decriminalization, but we have to start treating addiction like the health crisis that it is. Only a punitive response is just going to produce stronger and more dangerous drugs.
