"We were colonized in the 19th century and lived as a colony. Then, when the Soviet Union was established, we were not independent. We were part of the Soviet Union. A republic? Yes, but without any rights." I suppose each of the "republics" of the Soviet Union can say the same about themselves. The Soviet Union was a colonial Russian project, a reconstruction of the Russian Empire that declared the break from the Empire ideologically but used the imperial and colonial strategies and tactics to piece the state together.
