I tested Gemma 4 12b on my Macbook Pro M5 Max with 128GB of unified memory. It runs VERY slow for a 12b parameter model. 44 tokens/second. The lava lamp that it produced was also terrible. I would stick to Qwen 3.6 27b or Qwen 3.6 35b. Google is still way behind, even with their local models.

They take their proprietary training process and train a model with an model architecture that only contains publicly well known model arch layers & optimizations similar. This allows OpenAI to keep their internal model architecture an secret while they open weight an SOTA model. This is a pretty wild model! You can use it to turn an image into a 3D object with texture. The quality is out of this world! I'm not even a designer, and I've been using this nonstop for the last 2 hours. The model is Hunyuan 3D 2.1. It's open source. You'll find model weights, training/inference code, data pipelines, and architecture on their repository. You can even fine-tune it if you want! Qwen 3.7 Max looks incredible on paper. Then I spent $43 in 15 minutes of vibe coding. Best Chinese model on every benchmark. #1 on SWE-Bench Pro. #4 on BridgeBench UI. The scores are legit. But in a real workflow it came back with 15 errors on a single task. No subsidies like Claude Code or Codex. Cheaper per token, more expensive per task. Chinese models are getting closer.
