Naipoki was rescued in December 2010 from a well in Samburu, around two months old. Fifteen years on, she is living wild, and Nsimba is her first calf. It was a heartbreaking and unimaginable scene, one that no child should ever be part of. Yet, from that tragedy, a life was saved. Ndahigwa, who was not himself targeted during the genocide and worked with the Red Cross, chose compassion over fear. In a time when many turned away, he stepped forward. He rescued Mimi and raised her as his own, caring for her from infancy through adulthood. He gave her not only a chance to live, but a chance to grow, to be loved, and to belong. He stood by her side through the years, supporting her until she eventually got married. However, her marriage did not last, as her husband constantly pressured and mistreated her, questioning her about a family she never had the chance to know. She started drawing at 12, moving from glass painting to watercolours to charcoal, a talent the Israeli occupation army took from her with a single strike. Areej al-Saafin, a Palestinian artist from Gaza, woke up at 5 in the morning to fire on her face and rubble thrown across her body. She screamed for her mother, who did not respond at first. When she got up, she was walking on debris. Her mother was alive but bleeding from her head. Areej al-Saafin, a Palestinian artist from Gaza, woke up at 5 in the morning to fire on her face and rubble thrown across her body. She screamed for her mother, who did not respond at first. When she got up, she was walking on debris. Her mother was alive but bleeding from her head. A shrapnel fragment fired by the Israeli occupation had entered her eye, causing internal bleeding in her brain, intestines, and eye simultaneously. To stop the bleeding, doctors removed the eye.
