When Jamal was first heard by Miles Davis in the mid-50s Davis offered him a spot in his band but Jamal turned him down. Though it meant loss of income, Jamal wanted to have his own band and develop his own group sound. This paid off in the late-50s as his trio became big.

Saw Jamal at jazz fest in 90’s. Changed my life
