All of this happened in China this week. A thread 🧵1/10
15 条评论

Stock Meltdown. Beijing snapped into crisis mode to arrest a $7 trillion selloff in stocks, including abruptly firing its markets chief. But President Xi can't rely on an old playbook to calm markets. 2/10

Safe Haven. Ailing property and equity markets are driving people to park their cash in much safer places. Gold and silver sales hit a six-year high ahead of the Lunar New Year, another symptom of dwindling confidence. 3/10

Isolated Affair. Beijing's equity woes aren't having much impact on the rest of the world. Stress hasn't spilled into global markets -- a stark contrast from a stocks crash in 2015 and the US-China trade war in 2018. 4/10

Messiness. Lionel Messi enraged fans, government officials and event organizers after he sat out a football match in Hong Kong, citing an injury. Public anger in China over the perceived slight may threaten the player's partnerships with firms there. 5/10

Pork Gloom. Slumping pork prices ahead of the new year celebrations are underscoring worries about weak consumption. Consumer prices fell last month at the fastest pace since the financial crisis. 6/10

Better Value. Yum China, the operator of KFC and Pizza Hut in the mainland, is profiting from the nation's downturn. The firm is defying an industry slump by offering discount meals, cheaper cuts of meat and expanding in lower-tier cities. 7/10

Stabilizing Ties. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen wants to travel to China this year, a visiting US delegation told officials in Beijing. The Chinese side raised worries over tariffs and investment restrictions during the meetings. 8/10

Spying. Australian writer Yang Hengjun has received a suspended death sentence in China after being found guilty of espionage. It's a major blow to ties between the two nations which had been improving over the past 18 months. 9/10

Fallout. The disappearance of star banker Bao Fan has made his firm a buyout target. His official resignation last week may help clear the way. The boutique Chinese investment bank has seen 100 staffers depart in the past year. 10/10

All I can say is good on China... the sooner the people get rid of that corrupt regime, the better they, regional and international communities will be.

Fabulous jumper, Happy New Year! 🧨
