“My wife is very kind to me, so she didn’t wake me up for a couple of hours.” John Martinis was sleeping when news of his Nobel Prize in Physics broke earlier this week. His wife Jean, up reading late into the night received the calls, but let him sleep on. Meet our new physics laureate in a conversation where he talks about the excitement of investigating problems with fellow laureates John Clarke and Michel Devoret four decades ago and how that experience taught him what to aim for when building labs in both academic and industry. “I can’t imagine accepting the prize without them.” In this interview shortly after the prize announcement, new physics laureate John Clarke is still stunned by the news. He praises his co-laureates John Martinis and Michel Devoret, who he worked together with at a lab in Berkeley, California, some 40 years ago. ICYMI, last week, professor emeritus John Clarke shared the Nobel Prize in physics with John Martinis and Michel Devoret, who worked alongside Clarke researching quantum tunneling while at Cal. And for chemistry, Professor Omar Yaghi was recognized for his work in developing metal-organic frameworks. Yaghi's win brings UC Berkeley's count to a total of 28 faculty members who have won a Nobel Prize.

“I had completely forgotten that October was Nobel Prize month!” Physics laureate Michel Devoret had a hard time believing it was true when he learned about his Nobel Prize. “Just to be sure, I called my daughter who is living in Paris, nine hours ahead of me. She was able to see that this is for real,” he tells us. In this interview, Devoret reflects on the excitement of seeing the fruits of research. He also talks about his co-laureate John Clarke, one of his role models.

For him, AI is a tool that will help scientists make even more discoveries in the years to come. "I think we, everyone of us, can always do more and do better." During his Nobel Prize lecture, this year's chemistry laureate Omar Yaghi spoke about one of his role models, Marie Skłodowska Curie. Yaghi has a portrait of Curie at his office to inspire and encourage his lab colleagues. Marie Skłodowska Curie was awarded two Nobel Prizes in two scientific categories, physics 1903 and chemistry 1911. How are the Nobel Prize laureates selected? January is the last month of the year to submit candidates for the 2026 Nobel Prizes. Thousands of members of academies, university professors, scientists, previous laureates and members of parliamentary assemblies and others are able to nominate. The nominators are chosen in such a way that as many countries and universities as possible are represented over time. After receiving all nominations, the Nobel Committees of the four prize-awarding institutions are responsible for the selection of the candidates. Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others.
