Llamas spit mainly to communicate within their herd, often to establish dominance, reject mating advances, or protect food. It's a natural social behavior, not just for defense. They may spit at humans when feeling threatened or stressed, especially if poorly socialized, like in some petting zoos. Warning signs include raised chins and flattened ears, followed by a spit of stomach contents up to 10 feet, which is unpleasant for both llama and target. Alpacas, like in the video, behave similarly. With proper care, spitting at humans is rare.
