🚨 BREAKING: NYC Spends Nearly 20x More Per Migrant Than Chicago—Why the huge difference? Yesterday, mayors from across the country testified before Congress, revealing the latest financial toll of the migrant crisis. Two cities stand out: New York City and Chicago. The numbers show a shocking gap in spending, with New York City spending nearly 20 times more per migrant than Chicago. Chicago reported taking in over 51,000 migrants since August 2022, costing taxpayers $295 million—averaging $5,784 per migrant. New York City, on the other hand, stated it has taken in over 230,000 migrants since 2022, with a total cost of $7 billion—averaging $30,434 per migrant. Despite the cost, due to the 30- and 60-day rules, migrants in NYC are no longer staying in shelters long-term. The cost of the migrant crisis led to deep budget cuts across New York City agencies last year. The NYPD was set to cut academy classes, bringing officer numbers to their lowest since the 1990s. The FDNY faced overtime reductions and staff cuts. Public schools saw planned cuts to programs like Summer Rising. Public libraries planned Sunday closures. After pushback, some of these cuts were reversed. Mayor Adams later canceled the planned 5% cuts across all city agencies, citing better-than-expected tax revenue and a 20% reduction in migrant-related spending. This raises the big question: If the cost of living is similar between New York and Chicago, why is NYC spending so much more per migrant? By Leeroy Johnson For licensing email [email protected]
