After #Israel respects going back to 1974 ceasefire, #Syria will consider talking further to Israel over the Golan (toward peace). But then he added that current Arab peace treaties, including Abraham Accords, are government-to-government and not people-to-people because the Arab and Islamic street is not on board (and currently inflamed over Gaza). These treaties should be revised (to become more genuine and reflect “Arab street”). So, here you have it, no bilateral Syrian peace with Israel (like Abraham Accords), and no peace with Israel without Syria getting back the Golan.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani on Israel: After the 8th of December, more than 1,000 airstrikes hit Syria, targeting civilian and military sites. New Syrian territories were occupied, Syrian citizens were detained by Israel, and more than 500 land incursions were conducted. Since day one, the Syrian state has wanted to deal realistically with Israel. We said that we want to focus on reconstruction. We want recovery first, and then development. But perhaps Israel did not welcome that approach, as it appeared to be looking for side conflicts in the region. We rejected that path. We remained patient and chose negotiations. With the support of the United States, we managed to bring Israel to direct negotiations. The goal of these negotiations, as we see it, is Israel’s withdrawal from the territories it occupied after the 8th of December, preventing Israel from violating Syrian airspace, and ensuring that there are no further incursions into Syrian territory. These are our demands. Israel is overreacting to perceived threats, and I believe this is the wrong policy. In fact, such policies may become the gravest threat to Israel itself, rather than the threats it perceives from others. I do not believe Israel can ignore the realistic approach Syria is following. President Trump and the United States are supporting this approach and mediating this dialogue.

In a speech yesterday, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem urged the new Syrian authorities not to let the new Syria to be dictated to by states that serve Israel. Qassem also acknowledged that Hezbollah had lost its military bridge from Iran to Lebanon through Syria, but said that the resistance would recover. Since the fall of Bashar Al Assad, Israel has been bombing Syrian military sites relentlessly in an attempt to completely destroy its military capabilities.

I want to share this video from my trip to Syria two weeks ago to give you an idea of what half of the country looks like and more of an understanding of how beyond absurd it is for President Trump to say that Syria should take on Hezbollah. Aside from Syria being utterly physically and economically shattered, there is also the fact that it too is currently being occupied by Israel, who started bombing and grabbing more land the minute the regime of Bashar al-Assad fell. Worth remembering that the former Syrian regime, despite being part of the “axis” kept its border with Israel pretty quiet. Odd dynamic I know, but yes the old Syria facilitated the movement of weapons to Hezbollah while at the same time had a quiet deal with Israel and the US. As a senior official said to me back in those years, its better the devil we know who will stick to the status quo with Israel. Since al-Sharaa toppled the Assad regime, Israel has been regularly bombing and grabbing more Syrian land under that good old “national security” argument, even though al-Sharaa has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of attacking Israel and has in fact been rather passive on Israel’s actions. And yes he, the current government, many Syrians might hate Hezbollah for the role they played in propping up Bashar al-Assad and fighting with the former regime, but the sheer ludicrousness of suggesting they trot over to Lebanon and get rid of Hezbollah to help Israel is mindblowing, and not just from the Syria side but also can you imagine what Israel would do if the people whose military capabilities its bombing and “weakening” in Syria just showed up on its border with Lebanon?
