No, not a battery one. And the pads that can be warmed in a microwave and last a few hours get quite hot, so can burn little paws. You can insulate the water dish though. Here's a video I made about that:

The ground has been baked so dry and rock hard that the Red Kites are coming down in my garden to eat the leftover cat food I put out for the foxes. Earthworms and beetles make up a major part of a red kite's diet and, just like our hedgehogs, they can starve in prolonged hot dry weather. Their natural prey is inaccessible, as it has burrowed deep down into the earth, where the soil is still moist. Our hedgehogs are now starving too, so as well as clean water, please put out a dish of dry cat/kitten food each evening. Any type or flavour, as long as meat is the first listed ingredient. Thank you.❤️

It's official! The hedgehogs are starting to rise from hibernation. They will be weak, hungry and thirsty, and a little slow and disorientated at first. But these vulnerable little animals will use the last of their remaining energy getting back to the one place they trust will have good safe food and clean water waiting for them - you!🥰 So please have your dry kitten/cat food out ready, and plenty of fresh water each evening. It won't be long now, and it's far too early for there to be any natural food around, so your provisions will literally be a life saver. This is an ex-patient returning here yesterday, just after rising from his hibernation nest in the woods. I know he's an ex-patient because he heads straight for pen 5, the favourite pen for all the hedgehogs (I have no idea why, and there are 6 identical pens!). I know he's fresh from hibernation because although he knows the way well, he's slow, hesitant, stopping to smell his way. And I know he's a boy, because boys rise from hibernation first, about a month before the girls. They need this time to eat without distraction, in order to recover from hibernation and build themselves back up to a strong healthy state, ready for the trials of mating. Don't worry if yours aren't up yet. The later they went down, the later they will rise.

The question I'm being asked most often lately is: "Where have all my hedgehogs gone?" If the hedgehogs you regularly feed haven't made an appearance lately, don't worry. It happens every year at this time. They have found a natural souce of food - possibly a clump of nettles full of newly emerged caterpillars - and they will make the most of this bonanza while it lasts. (Hedgehogs will ALWAYS prefer their own naturally foraged food over what we provide, so you can never overfeed them or make them dependent on you). So please keep a little food out every night, as they will return when the bonanza runs out, and it'll be when you least expect it. Put a saucer over it, to keep it fresh for longer and to keep the slugs out. And this is the perfect time to make the most of their absence by giving their house a good clean and preparing it for autumn.

This time of year you may find foxes coming into your garden, trying to take the food you've put out for the hedgehogs. Mid March is peak baby birthing time for foxes, so right now these new mums are feeding lots of little mouths, so are extra hungry. And the dads are desperately looking for food to take home to mums who can't yet leave the den and their new cubs. So please be patient with them. They won't harm the hedgehogs, they just need food. A raw egg in its shell makes an easy takeaway meal for them. And dog or cat food, wet or dry, or dog treats, will give them the extra nutrition and calories they need. Use a heavy dish, or pin it down (as shown in the video below) as they will try to steal it. I always imagine them thinking, "This dish is magic! It refills with food every night. If take it home I'll never have to go out looking for food again!" 😊

You know how a wide, shallow dish of water will evaporate quicker than the same amount of water in a tall cup? That's because the wide dish has a large Surface Area To Volume Ratio. And that's what hedgehogs have: A wide, fat, flat-ish area of body holding a small amount of volume (blood). Most mammal's blood is around 10% of their body weight. But with hedgehogs it's only 8%. This means that hedgehogs get dehydrated quicker than other mammals, so need to drink lots more water. So please go through that cupboard in your kitchen where you keep the flan dishes and baking tins that you never use, and put one by your front door and one by your back door. Fill them up with water, and refresh that before you go to bed. It's never been so easy to save a life.

Even if you are unable to do anything else, please provide fresh water nightly. Every night of the year. Animals die of thirst not only in the hot summer months, but throughout the winter months also, when natural water sources are frozen and inaccessible. A simple turn of the tap for you means the difference between life and death for them. This is a just a ground bird bath in my front garden. Visited during the day by all manner of birds, drinking and bathing. Included in the night shift, beside the hedgehogs and foxes, are smaller, but no less important creatures. Notice beneath the stray cat is a snail taking a drink. Then look under him, and there's a little frog quenching his thirst. Frogs don't drink through their mouths, they absorb the water through their skin via a 'drinking patch' on their belly and the underside of their thighs. Providing clean water is such an easy way to save a life. Please be a wildlife hero and get that water out there now.

This is dining at The Ivy for hedgehogs.🥰 Caterpillars and beetles. That's what hedgehogs eat. Not slugs and snails (they carry lungworm - deadly to all mammals; hedgehogs have no magical defence). And your garden doesn't have to be 'messy' to support our precious wildlife. You can have the best of both worlds. If you mow a lawn, please leave the edges and the corners. You will get used to seeing it without it annoying you, I promise, and the difference it makes: the divesity of life that will thrive in your more natural, unregimented garden will bring you such joy. As we enter yet another week of drought conditions please, I beg you, put out water for the wildlife. They have nothing. No puddles. No ponds. No streams. All have dried up. Sometimes the birds are thought of and provided for. But the nocturnal animals go unseen. Unthought of. No kind dishes. Just the tantalising smell of water from a pond they may drown in, or a drain they may get trapped in. Or a stagnant, dirty old birdbath they may get fatal fluke from. Hedgehogs need to drink a lot of water to stay healthy. Please provide clean, fresh, safe, ground level water each evening for our precious nocturnal wildlife. Tap water is best. Pop a dish or two out tonight. Dying of thirst is a terrible, painful way to die. It should never happen to any animal, and certainly not in a country that has the safest tap water in the world. The few minutes it takes you to fill a dish will make the difference between life and death.❤️

This tiny little baby girl is Noa. Noa weighs just 99 grams. She's suffering from severe malnutrition and starvation because we've destroyed her natural food. She should be stuffing herself with caterpillars, but look around. How many butterflies have you seen this year? Until nature can recover (which means all of us have to act responsibly and allow our gardens to be less controlled, more natural and wild) we need to provide food for these gentle, trusting, silent victims of our excesses. The streets of Valencia are eerily empty as the region braces for more heavy rains. WCK is not going anywhere. More than 160 towns have cancelled school as a precaution, and some residents have been instructed to seek higher ground or evacuate. Despite restrictions, our teams have been able to provide more than 11,000 hot meals and sandwiches today and our support of local food vendors expanded to include a pescadería where people can pick up fresh fish. Of course you might occasionally see this because an animal dying of hunger will eat anything to stop the pain. Starving children are seen eating mud, but that doesn't mean mud is on the human menu. Our hedgehogs are dying of starvation because we've destroyed their habitat and natural food. Common sense alone will tell you that if hedgehogs really did eat slugs, they would be fat and flourishing and would never need to hibernate for lack of food!😋 We all have plenty of slugs! So if you see this myth anywhere, please challenge it. Educate them. For hog's sake.

This week will be very hot and most natural sources of water have dried up. Please provide water for our wildlife. Day and night. You'll never find an easier, more satisfying way to save a life.

Trump: When I was president, I demanded that this guy, the governor, accept the water coming from the north, from way up in Canada. And, you know, the north, it flows down through right through Los Angeles. I mean, massive millions and millions of gallons of water a week, probably, I think, even a day. At the CJP protest, food distribution has been stopped from today. The reason is that people were coming 24/7 just to eat free food, and the entire protest had turned into a picnic spot. So now, food distribution has been stopped. Only biscuit packets are being given, and those are only for people who have been protesting the entire day. Their names are recorded before they receive a biscuit packet. Abhijeet Dipke and Junaid should not have stopped distributing food because whatever little crowd was there was coming only for the free food. Now, no one will come to the protest.
