As a parent, lap reading is a joy. It’s a chance to cuddle your little one, while exposing them to rich vocabulary, concepts of print, and the wonder of books. I think this is a fair statement: Golfers - while putting a 30 footer - are consciously reducing anatomical ranges of motion in the many joints and limbs from the hands to the feet - especially when compared to the range of motions used during a 300 yard drive. You WOULD THINK that reducing these anatomical ranges of motion while putting, a better overall control of the face-to-path relationship would emerge. Most golfers would ASSUME that their face-to-path control would be noticeably better on 10 30-footers when compared to their face-to-path control on 10 full powered drives. This HAS TO MAKE SENSE because the rate of closure of the club face on a drive is in the 2500° per second range while the rate of closure of the club face on a 30 foot putt is in the 30° per second range. Well, lo and behold, it does not. And in fact, many high level golfers show better face-to-path control with their driver at 115 mph than their face-to-path control with their putter at 6 mph. So, this begs the question for golf instructors and competitive golfers - in the pursuit of more accuracy from shot to shot, is it wise to attempt to reduce your own personal rate of closure with any club - driver through putter - in the hopes that it will bring “better face-to-path control” which would lead to more accurate shot outcomes? Start thinking. It may mean a lot to your personal journey towards better golf.
