What’s the difference between this and other “made for ride” characters Disney has created in the past but never carved out a story for? At least Hondo has source material behind him, even if he’s not a household name.

Good point @JimShull. Dialog is usually lost on the audience as well. The situation between characters or "sight gags" of what's going on is what usually reads first, dialog second. Another reason Marc Davis was so effective.

Tell me you know nothing a bout Star Wars without saying "I know nothing about Star Wars".
