“Hey - has anyone seen Grandpa’s ashes? They were just on the mantle yesterday…”

Trickling rainwater through hardwood ash can extract potassium/sodium hydroxide alkaline enough for making soap or water glass

@weed1673 I also use the ash to clean the wood burner glass. Works A GREAT!

@weed1673 I dump my fireplace ash inside the chicken run. They like it for their winter dust baths

You can also use wood ash to make stone structures just like the ancients did

It is also the base for lye. There are fancy methods for rendering ash into lye. I am old school. 5-gal bucket. Add ash (maybe 1/3 full), add water, stir, let soak, then scoop off the water. (I might do this a few times if its weak.) Strength can be tested just as easily. I use the "egg float" test. (An egg (or a potato) should float enough to see at least a dime-sized part of the egg. If it sinks, dump the water back in the bucket and go again. NOTE: some people will say this only works for specific woods. NOT true. You think Pioneers cared what ash they used!?!?

Okay, I didn’t know the deodorizer in the refrigerator trick, and the ant repellent is a good one too

You can also put a pinch of it in your salt shaker to provide extra trace minerals. This should come with a warning as well. Like don't burn treated lumber, don't mix garbage with your wood and don't use chemical fuels to ignite fires.

I also full an old cat food can and then just a little kerosene until it is all wet. Makes an amazingly effective fire starter. Burns long, clean and reusable.

Wood ash, specifically from hard wood, is great for producing lye for soap making, but it requires leaching with rain water through straw and stone pebbles. Soft wood ash works well too, but it's too strong for general use, but works well for degreasing.

@Seedsoilsunrain I am paranoid using wood ash as garden soil additive because of heavy metals. Am I crazy for thinking this @grok Other Thoughts?
