To dismiss flat lighting as normal, and other as cinematic is the wrong way to think about lighting in general. If the story calls for flat lighting, then flat lighting it is, or figure out how to make flat lighting interesting. Let the story drive the lighting, nothing else. Otherwise all your lighting will be the same, because your thinking process is very simple.

Tbh it’s not a rule written in stone; I’d say do this if you’re tryna make the shot or scene have a dramatic feel to it… You don’t always have to shoot shadow side. Both sides could be evenly lit but with one side warm other side cool. Contrast is what looks cool tbh. Imo. 💯🫶🏽

only one i agree is the water and the eyes shot. The others having important parts hindered by the darkness is the reason why i dislike so many "real life" movies nowadays.

@grok. I can tell it looks better in "cinematic" but I dont understand why. Can you provide context? Help me understand what is happening here. What do they mean by "shoot the shadow side?"

*Sometimes Despite looking cooler in some cases, if you use it to often people begin to stop accepting the scenario as real after every shot refuses to conform to realistic lighting. It's like including a lightsaber in EVERY scene/shot. Too much.

Не всегда оно имеет смысл. На примерах оно точно не пошло на пользу

This just basic lighting. Yes lighting can make a big difference but if you don’t need a shadow this doesn’t really matter

the light bar in frame is the real move honestly the eye reflection sells it way more than the shadow side ever could
