When Sergio Leone finished filming Once Upon a Time in America, the assembled footage reportedly ran 8–10 hours. Leone and editor Nino Baragli cut it to around 6 hours, hoping to release it as two three-hour films. The producers refused, forcing Leone to trim it to 3 hours 49 minutes. Then, for its U.S. release, the studio slashed it again to just 139 minutes, without Leone’s approval. One of cinema’s greatest epics should have been much longer!

Meet Joe Black has no business being 3 hours. This is a great example of a good film that’s too long. Someone needed to go back into a dark editing room & cut at least 30 minutes from this film. You can start & finish a holiday roast in the time it takes to watch this movie.

Devastated to hear that Brian Wilson has died. He was and is the greatest genius in the history of popular music, and it’s not close. Even in this solo demo his gift is clear, though to him it’s just another take (‘let’s hear that’, he casually says at the end). Add his brothers’ harmonies and it’s the closest thing we have to hearing the voice of God. Rest in peace, the greatest of all time.
