Even Gorbachev denies the claim of assurance that NATO wouldn’t expand. Every former Warsaw Pact member joined as soon as they could. The war was a land grab. Period. It failed so Putin had to make excuses: Nazis, NATO, oppressed Russian speakers, etc. .

That’s a good way to describe it. I’m haven’t liked the NATO expansion “not one inch” argument, because it’s hollow, but I like the starting point and not disputing it.

I have never understood how the Ukraine bashers arrived at their opinions. Today, I've been asking many of them but all I get is vitriol or no response at all. This speech, more or less, mirrors my own thoughts on the subject. Bookmarked.

Weirdly enough, the English version of the 1994 Budapest memorandum reads “assurances”, but the equally valid Ukrainian alternate reads “harantii” - guarantees. In the end it was assurances (and guarantees!) about nothing.

Note: NATO did not expand eastward. russia, however, stopped occupying parts of Europe, which allowed many countries to govern themselves again, and choose their own alliances.
