In 2022, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) removed Nigeria from its list of piracy prone nations, describing Nigeria's maritime domain as one of the safest in the world, following a dramatic decline in piracy and sea robbery incidents. Now in November 2025 Nigeria was re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) after a 14 year absence. This is an affirmation of international confidence in Nigeria's maritime capabilities. NIMASA, via its Deep Blue Project has been a critical force multiplier for the Nigerian Navy, significantly strengthening the security of Nigeria’s maritime environment.

Somaliland: The Strategic Gateway the World Can No Longer Ignore At the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia lies a stable, democratic, and strategically vital nation overlooking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden — #Somaliland. For over three decades, Somaliland has maintained peace, built democratic institutions, and safeguarded one of the world’s most important maritime corridors, through which over 12% of global trade passes. With Israel’s historic recognition, the global conversation has shifted. The question is no longer whether Somaliland will be recognized — but who will lead next. 🇺🇸 For the United States, Somaliland offers: A reliable democratic partner in a volatile region Strategic access to the Red Sea A counterbalance to instability and unchecked Chinese expansion 🇮🇳 For #India, Somaliland represents: A natural Indo-Pacific partner Secure maritime cooperation A stable gateway to African markets and energy diversification Recognition is not charity. It is strategy. The gateway is open. History rewards those who act early. ▶️ Watch. Share. Engage.

🚨BREAKING: Watch President Cabdiraxmaan Cirro deliver a major strategic case for Somaliland in Washington. Addressing the Hudson Institute, President Irro highlighted Somaliland’s history, the failed 1960 union, the 2005 AU fact-finding mission and the genocide suffered by the people of Somaliland. He presented Berbera and Somaliland’s strategic location as a major opportunity for the United States, emphasizing its maritime access, stability and the absence of competing foreign military bases. President Irro also urged Washington to recognize the contrast between Somaliland and Somalia, pointing to Somaliland’s record of security and noting that no U.S. service members have been killed in Somaliland over the past 25 years. He offered Somaliland’s strategic partnership, Berbera and an Ethiopian corridor as tools to strengthen U.S. maritime security and counter growing Chinese influence in Djibouti and Somalia. His message to Washington was direct: Look at the map. Geography is the witness. A major strategic message from Somaliland’s President to the United States.

❗❗❗🚨 🇺🇸 BIG | The US is sending military forces to the Gulf of Oman, indicating that the United States is preparing to resume war with Iran. A US P-8A maritime reconnaissance aircraft flies over the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman, in conjunction with a KC-46A tanker north of the Gulf of Oman to support air operations. Earlier, sudden appearance of a US Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft off Pakistan’s coastline has expanded the strategic geography of the ongoing US-Iran confrontation from the Strait of Hormuz into the Northern Arabian Sea, introducing a potentially significant escalation in maritime monitoring patterns.

A Day at Karwar Naval Base! On the occasion of the National Maritime Day, on 05 Apr 25, I had the privilege of witnessing a truly remarkable milestone for India, the #IndianNavy, and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). From the ambitious strides in building infrastructure and enhancing naval capabilities as well as strengthening the region's economy through Project Seabird to Flagging off INS Sunayna which set sail as the Indian Ocean Ship SAGAR fostering strong bonds of friendship across the Indian Ocean, and carrying out a comprehensive review of the Navy's combat capabilities and future plans. In the true spirit of MAHASAGAR, the Indian Navy continues its exceptional commitment to ensuring maritime security, engaging with IOR nations, and contributing significantly to nation-building. This day is a reminder of how vital our maritime domain is, not just for India's security, but for fostering harmony and growth across the region. SpokespersonNavy

I arrived in Athens, Greece for the 9th Our Oceans Conference. Oceans face increasing pressure from human activity like offshore wind farms and shipping, highlighting the urgent need for protection. Pre-pandemic, tourism thrived but exposed flaws in traditional models. As we reopen, we must choose sustainable coastal tourism for regeneration. Plastic pollution, especially in Nigeria, demands action. The President has charged the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy through Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) with the administration of maritime safety, seafarers standards and security, maritime labour, shipping regulation, promotion of commercial shipping and cabotage activities, pollution prevention and control in the marine environment. The Ministry through the Agency also implements International Maritime Organization (IMO) and had domesticated International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions. The Agency's efforts are complemented by the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and marine Research which conducts research into the resources and physical characteristics of the Nigerian territorial waters and the high seas. But this isn't just about policies and regulations—it's about our special relationship with the sea, which is now more threatened than ever. We must act now to turn the tide and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
