So you might expect that evolution has optimised our immune system, and there won't be much low-hanging fruit for improving this with science. But bacteria and viruses evolve so quickly that evolution is constantly racing just to keep up. It doesn't have time to optimise perfectly. Case in point: Our primate ancestors used to have built-in genetic defence against HIV-like viruses. But at some point, the gene was repurposed to protect against a different virus that posed more of a threat. That virus has since disappeared, but our genome is still protecting against it - and failing to protect us against HIV. The good news is that we should expect there to be many opportunities where science can do better than evolution.

Many people often times wonder why it is that mosquitoes transmit malaria from one person to another but same mosquito cannot transmit HIV from one person to another. I summarized the reason in this video but I will also reiterate 1. HIV cannot survive inside mosquitoes When mosquito bites someone infected with HIV, it actually picks up some of the virus . However the virus is rapidly broken down in the gut of the mosquito . Hence it does not get passed to the next person. 2. Mosquitoes do not inject previous blood into the next person When mosquitoes bite a person, they inject saliva into the person’s bite spot and this saliva is what prevents the blood from clotting while the mosquito sucks out the blood juice. It is through this process of injection of saliva that it passes Malaria , Dengue fever etc but HIV can’t be passed this way 3. HIV can only survive I specific body cells HIV needs specific body cells called CD4 cells to survive . Of course mosquito does not have those cells and HIV can thus not survive inside them. It is degraded immediately Therefore when next someone suggests that Mosquito can transmit HIV. Please feel free to give them a resounding slap on my behalf . Thank You Dr Penking

Rose shared her mixed emotions about that potential matchup: “It’ll be weird, but I mean, we’re martial artists. I would love to have a conversation about it and talk with her first and everything like that. She’s somebody who inspired me and I’ve looked up to. It would definitely be conflicting emotions, but at the same time, I’m down to do it. I’m devastated to hear about the passing of an incredible young woman, activist and hero Hydeia Broadbent. In 1992, I did a Nickelodeon special called “A Conversation with Magic”, and 7-year-old Hydeia and I made an incredible impact. Hydeia changed the world with her bravery, speaking about how living with HIV affected her life since birth. She dedicated her life to activism and became a change agent in the HIV/AIDS fight. By speaking out at such a young age, she helped so many people, young and old, because she wasn’t afraid to share her story and allowed everyone to see that those living with HIV and AIDS were everyday people and should be treated with respect. Thanks to Hydeia, millions were educated, stigmas were broken, and attitudes about HIV/AIDs were changed. We will miss her powerful voice in this world. Cookie and I are praying for the Broadbent family and everyone that knew and loved Hydeia.
