Not just the US. Everywhere that neoliberalism has been adopted is essentially an “inverted totalitarian” state (I prefer “donocracy” - the oligarchs buy the policies and politicians and the 99% get the toy steering wheel of voting.

Certain Americans aren’t capable of accepting those facts. They swear they have a democracy, even though their Supreme Court has taken over, they’re still being ruled by the electoral college, their tax dollars are being spent on an apartheid state, etc.

"cosplaying as a democracy" Civics has long not been taught in schooling - so folks wouldn't know what they don't know.
