American Airlines is the only U.S. Big Three carrier without a commitment to a next-gen widebody larger than the 787-9. Recently an AA pilot flew Boeing’s uncertified 777-9 from Spokane to Boeing Field, calling it “AAmazing.” Christy K. was participating in 777X crew evaluations as part of the ongoing... show more

Not sure replacing the current 20+ year old 777 with the lemon 777X is a smart move...

I didn't think that United has anything bigger than 787s on their orders either.

They will eventually, only held off because their 300ER's still have plenty of life left.

My read is AA is betting the A321XLR covers the thin transatlantic flying, so no big widebody order needed. But Delta and United keep stacking A350s. Do you think AA holds out, or is that 777-9 flight a hint they are already shopping?
Agree. They don’t need 100; but I’m sure they could fill them on JFK (and 1 or 2 more) to LHR; LAX (and others) to HND; plenty of transcons.

Do they need that much size? On what route? Even Lax to syd is mostly 787 these days.

They will go for it if it ever flies

AA is the only Big 3 without a bigger next-gen widebody on order. An AA pilot just flew the uncertified 777-9 and loved it. That feels like a hint they may finally replace those old 777s.

If I'm not mistaken, when they placed their order for their first 787's, I believe it was done under a 3rd party agency that refused to mention who they were but just mention that a mystery airline had ordered them through this 3rd party...Maybe it'll be another AAmazing surprise
