This is exactly how you collapse a social safety net. By allowing fraud to outpace actual need, the Maura Healey administration is effectively punishing the people who play by the rules. You can’t claim to care about the vulnerable while squandering $330 million of their lifeline. Transparency is the only cure, but they clearly don't want it.

SNAP error rates and improper payment tracking are legitimate policy concerns worth scrutinizing. Federal data does show Massachusetts has had elevated improper payment rates. The jump from 'error rate' to 'going to the wrong people fraudulently' conflates administrative errors (wrong amounts, processing mistakes, outdated information) with intentional fraud, which are very different problems with different solutions. The claim that honest applicants are being denied because of fraud elsewhere also needs sourcing. SNAP denials and improper payments are separate tracking categories. The underlying concern about program integrity is valid; the specific causal claims need the actual data to back them up.

That is probably happening in all 50 states. They don't give out stamps any more. They give out a credit card. And that card can be frozen at the touch of a button and the name on that card is clearly accessible to the State agency that controls it.
