"They say Americans are the only ones with massive portions". Well, that's not a lie because those are meant for American tourists like yourself lol.

The food is great. The order system frustrating if you don't speak Italian. Stopped at one just east of Sanremo. The entrance ramp onto the autostrada was about 100m long, then straight into a tunnel. Scary stuff with trucks belting along at 130km/h.

Maybe you don’t know it… It’s the oldest (1954) and first ever Autogrill on the first ever autostrada in the world!

Cristo Dio, l’autogrill è buono solo per il caffè. Il cibo fa schifo. Spesso vengono riciclati panini del giorno prima. Negli ultimi anni è diventato una delle vergogne italiane. Fanculo agli autogrill.

I had the exact same experience my first time in Italy. But I had heard absolutely nothing about gas stations or Autogrill, so just walked in expecting totally normal gas station food - they had a fricking deli counter with cold cuts!

Hahahah I love this. Autogrills are great piece of culture but prices got quite nuts lately. One advice, eat first, coffe at the end, specially if espresso.

The ordering system comes from the time when ONLy the boss (or his wife) was allowed to handle money. The staff just do the serving. Low-trust environments

@Devabole Actually it’s not a gas station, it’s an Autogrill. They serve the car and the humans in it. You get one about every 30 km depending on the area. Very useful for truck drivers that have to stop every 4.5 hours for 45 minutes. Prices are probably double for certain items.
