Greg Abbott told CBS News’ Nicole Sganga that he’s been in communication with the Department of Homeland Security for months about the construction near Big Bend National Park, saying in conversations he had that “they would not be building any wall, any fence, any barrier like that.” Several months after rumors about a Big Bend border wall began to spread, construction that was underway on Monday came to a pause. “They had other tools and strategies where they could secure that portion of the border without erecting those types of barriers,” Abbott said. “No barriers whatsoever in Big Bend National Park.”

This marks the first time in U.S. history these laws have been waived in a national park. With these laws gutted and a $1.7 billion construction contract already issued, very little stands in the way of DHS contractors plowing into the park, permanently destroying countless archeological sites, blocking off river access and turning this peaceful national park into an industrial construction zone.
