The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has held a vigil outside Downing Street for Palestinian journalists killed by Israeli forces since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023. The vigil followed the killing of Anas al-Sharif, one of Gaza’s most prominent reporters, alongside Mohammed Qreiqeh and three others, when Israeli forces targeted a tent sheltering journalists outside Al-Shifa Hospital. Each attendee at the vigil held the name of a journalist killed by Israel in Gaza. The brother of martyred journalist Anas Al-Sharif revealed in an interview with Al Jazeera Mubasher that four days before his assassination, Anas was offered a “tempting” deal, one he firmly rejected. The offer was to stop his coverage from Gaza in exchange for leaving Gaza. Anas refused outright, choosing instead to continue reporting the truth until his final breath, a decision that ultimately cost him his life at the hands of the Israeli Occupation Forces who have killed hundreds of journalists in Gaza for the same reason. When asked about Israeli claims that Anas al-Sharif, Al Jazeera’s prominent journalist who was killed along with five other journalists in an Israeli attack on a tent sheltering Palestinian reporters on Sunday, was “head of a Hamas terrorist cell,” Salah Negm, Al Jazeera’s Director of News, said the BBC should “investigate that and scrutinise” the claims and ask “follow-up questions.” Negm also urged the BBC to hire Palestinian reporters inside Gaza so they can “convey what’s happening on the ground.”

As a Palestinian from Gaza and a human rights advocate, I sadly acknowledge that Israel has succeeded in concealing its crimes by preventing journalists from accessing Gaza and casting doubt on any field documentation of its crimes. What has been publicly exposed about the genocide crimes is very marginal compared to the actual scale of the atrocities.
