There’s been a lot of chatter about the cold blue blob in the North Atlantic lately. Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf 🌏 🦣 just published a paper very recently. The cold blob (warming hole) is not new. But perhaps against the backdrop of blazing red El Niño maps, people are noticing it more. That’s good. It’s a big deal, a canary in the coal mine. Here’s a level headed discussion on the latest science on the #AMOC - potential collapse - yes the cold blue blob in the N Atlantic is very likely due to a slowing of that vital circulation which is responsible for 25% of Northward heat transport. That’s a lot. So any major disruption is a major problem. Maybe watch it at like 1.25-1.5X the speed because my pace was a little slow.

In 1861, America went to war with itself, and the Union navy blockaded the southern ports. The cotton stopped crossing the ocean. ⚙️ In Lancashire, the mills began to close. By November 1862, three-fifths of the workforce stood idle. Hundreds of thousands went onto relief. The mill owners wanted the cotton flowing again. Break the blockade, they urged Westminster. Get the cotton moving. That would have meant Britain siding with the slave states. The workers were the ones being asked to pay for it. They said no. 📜 Manchester, the final days of December 1862. Cotton workers filled the Free Trade Hall. They voted, overwhelmingly, to stand with the Union. To endure the famine rather than profit from slave-picked cotton. Then they did something else. They wrote to the President of the United States. Despite everything they were losing. The letter went to Abraham Lincoln. It crossed the same ocean the cotton no longer could. ✍️ Washington, January 1863. Abraham Lincoln read what Lancashire had written. Hungry people, choosing his side over their own bread. Lily sharing her take on reading older classics like A Study in Scarlet and dealing with the outdated, culturally insensitive language in them: "I feel like we should always read texts contextually within the era that it was written in. Obviously that is not excusing any of the language, but that is just kind of helping us understand. When we're reading classics we've always got to be mindful... but at the same time we have to understand that it's a time piece."
