The birds originally came from India over 4,000 years ago where they were symbols of royalty and from the 1800s, they began to populate Western visual and decorative culture.

The average lifespan of an alpaca is 15–20 years, though some have lived as long as 28 years. Alpacas are members of the camelid family, which also includes llamas, guanacos, and vincunas. They are native to Peru, Chile, and Bolivia, and can live at altitudes of 10,000–16,000 ft above sea level.
