An 8-year-old turned an $8 microcontroller into a fully offline, voice-controlled AI storyteller. No Wi-Fi. No cloud. No API. Using an ESP32-S3, INMP 441 mic, i2s speaker and Max 98357A amplifier, Laksh built a bot that generates stories, creates animations, reads them aloud and responds to voice commands: play,... show more

your offline story-telling device is getting ready.

Here is how it works under the hood

🚀🚀

His daddy and mommy built it lol

🤣🤣🤣. Wish his father also knew how to build it.

His daddy mommy put him on video after building it. 😀

Super impressive build for an 8-year-old—getting local voice, animations, and LLM text generation playing nice together on an ESP32 is no small task! That said, calling it a complete storyteller is a bit generous given how harsh local TTS sounds on this hardware right now.

Agreed Jimmy. Tried eSpeak NG. Built his own lightweight English TTS. Same result. Interestingly, the ESP32 handles Chinese TTS much better. Pre-rendered speech sounds natural, but synthesized English speech is still poor. A high-quality offline English TTS for the ESP32 remains an open challenge.

Yes that's laksh level.. Any 8 year old can assemble these tools now.. The real level is creating a tinystories llm or a home grown esp microcontroller.. This mindset is exactly why Indian IT is a service class and not an innovation class

That’s the next plan.

WAIT OMDAYSSS 🤯🤯😎😎💪🏼💪🏼🇮🇳🇮🇳 👦🏻 👦🏻 ❤️❤️ GENIUS & WTF 😳 HE IS ONKY 8 DAMM

Laksh is a legend!! 🔥🚀

Have to take some guidance and directions from you.

An 8 year old outbuilding most adults with $8 in parts

for 8 year old thats a massive achievement. Good job, little buddy.

@itzjustshiro Check this out

If the bot stays offline, how do you stop a saved story becoming false precedent for the next prompt? Local storage improves privacy, but retrieval still needs a relevance gate and memory-off baseline. The test:

Good question. But, stories are not saved.

Wow wow 👏👏👏

👏👏👏

Genuinely impressive for an 8-year-old — offline inference on an ESP32-S3 plus voice I/O and animation is no small feat. For the TTS issue: worth trying a lighter phoneme-based engine like eSpeak-NG ported for embedded — might improve clarity within the memory budget.

Thanks Debashis. He tried espeak-NG which yielded similar results. Tried making own english TTS that too same. It seems ESP32 has a good Chinese language TTS. Pre-rendered words sound natural, while synthesised words are bad. Needs a lot of work on this.

Amazing Laksh !

Extremely clean repo. Extremely clean and well-structured code. Extremely detailed commenting with "- - - /xyz - - -" styling. Definitely not at all generated by AI.

How cool man. He's real life Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory🤣🤣

This is the future of on-device AI. ESP32-S3 running local models with no cloud dependency shows how accessible edge computing has become. The voice + animation loop on a $8 board is impressive. What local model did Laksh use for story generation?

He forked an open source model from Git created by @slvDev.

Amazing.

Thanks Rahul.

I love tinker babies

White pill of the day!

❤️

🤯

Well done Laksh, keep it up. You are the future of India. All the best.

Founder is the Father .. son is co- founder…. Nice effort by the father …..

Oh man

future elon musk ur son

prodigy in the making !

😊

Good 👍

Nice...at age 8 all we could do is crack open thick radio batteries and make a mess...

And that did set the tone for future builders. 🙌

This is the future of personal AI. Fully local, no cloud dependency, runs on cheap hardware. The 8-year-old just proved agents don't need big infra to be magical. What microcontroller project are you building next?

This is the kind of project that makes hardware suddenly feel magical again. The offline constraint forces real creativity — no lazy API calls. Would love to see how he handled the story generation prompt on that tiny chip.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

very smart boy, at his age I played minecraft

Congrats and wishing Laksh many more milestones

Unbelievable.. 👌
