Fireworks first appeared in China in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). They were a happy accident when alchemists mixed potassium nitrate, sulfur, and charcoal to make gunpowder. When they heated this mix inside a bamboo tube, it would explode and make a loud noise.
