An Amazon worker is seen using a powered trailer spotter With this tool, Amazon can have workers move these massive trailers around a yard. It is much cheaper than having a truck driver do it and no CDL or licensing is required This means a yard worker making $19... show more

And eventually he too will be replaced ….

You don’t need a CDL to operate a spotter truck on private property.

America has been importing millions of unskilled workers, and businesses are now developing tech specifically to avoid paying qualified Americans.

A shunter/spotter/yard jockey/whatever idiosyncrasy doesn't legally need a CDL-A and they usually make shit pay anyway with many already below $19/hr.

CDL is not required to move a trailer on private property so there's really no "work" being stolen A CDL driver should be hauling product down the highwwy, not driving around a parking lot

Pretty sure you don't need a CDL to drive a vehicle of any kind on private property.

A yard dog would have already moved that and went on break

Trailer Caddy One person can move a full semi-trailer or shipping container like it’s nothing. Battery-powered, zero CDL needed and manoeuvrability in tight yards.

We need to go back to what it should be, right?

That guy only has a job for another year, until they have a robot doing it.

is similar to workers moving planes around the tarmac at airports, are you suggesting that only licensed pilots should be able to move the planes too?

It's called a Commercial DRIVERS License. The trailers aren't full of cargo, and aren't being driven by a truck for miles on highways and freeways. Explain to me, why a CDL is needed to move them around a lot?

Actually, you don’t need a CDL to operate a yard tractor on private property

You don’t need a license or certification to operate a yard tractor as long as it is on private property.

Airplanes can be moved the same way.

Actually, they don't need a CDL to move trailers on private property with a semi.

This is most likely a empty trailer. Sure that’s the perfect scenario. Now try it with snow or heavy rain or heavy loads and multiple trailers moving around and backing up into the dock. Good luck

Ingenuity, the heart of doing business, right? So.. what's weird about that?

Try having a yard with 300+ trailers to move around in the snow and see how far you'll get mate.

So what you're saying is they still use the driver to drive but has someone else do the yardwork. That sounds like a win not a loss.

Paying a CDL to move trailers around the yard is dumb if you can cut the cost. Additionally, would this guy apparently willing to sell his labor for $19/hr even have a job if they didn't have the trailer dollies? People will bitch when he gets replaced with a robo dolly too.

Why are making this out as something sinister? Very common in many industries to move trailers, airplanes or whatever. No one gives it a second thought.

That’s slow as hell. A yard horse/hostler would be much faster, safer, and a CDL is not required. And if you find someone good at it, the company could offer to train them to get their CDL and earn more driving on the road.

You don't ever need a license or CDL to run a yard mule on private property. Whether driven or hand operated. In fact, many train in these before they ever attempt a CDL.

Lol why don’t you check out what Walmart and Doordash are doing with drones, in 2 years all truckers will be gone…all delivery. Buy land, make a homestead, the tech is here it just hasn’t been deployed yet

Effeciency is a good thing. The trailer it's self was a new invention at one time. Grok.. showing the old way

Trailers used to be moved around with a sort of truck/tug called a yard dog. The guy operating it didn’t need a CDL because he was only driving it on private property.

These are so much more efficient and more fun. You get air conditioning and protection from the elements. Obviously way more expensive but if you need to move trailers quickly and efficiently, these are the way to go. You can see the guy in the video has very low energy and motivation

This isn't new or unique to Amazon. Did the same thing at the tempurpedic plant. Kraft replaced 200 employees with 40 robot forklifts... A decade ago.

There goes another career path.

That’s nothing. Check out the Walmart drone in my yard an hour ago!

they can do the same job easy and do not need a cdl while they are just moving trailers around the yard

So what? There’s a massive shortage of truck drivers and it’s smart business.

Amazon amazes

Ton of options that do this already, that one looks inefficient if anything. Within a few years, human won’t even be deciding where to move them in the yard.
