American at Risk, Leg Held Like a Dog: Viral Video Shows Villagers Helping Detain U.S. Man Near India-Nepal Border A video reading 'villagers catch U.S. man sneaking across India-Nepal border' and circulating on social media appears to show villagers grabbing an American man by the leg as he is detained near the India-Nepal border, where authorities say he was attempting to cross into Nepal through an unauthorized route. According to Indian authorities, the man identified himself as 36-year-old Jordan Brown of California. He was detained Saturday near the Sonauli border in Uttar Pradesh after allegedly attempting to enter Nepal without a passport, visa, or other valid travel documents. Officials say he briefly tried to flee before being apprehended by India's border force, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), with assistance from local villagers. Authorities also said Brown gave inconsistent accounts of his identity, travel history, and how he entered India. India and Nepal are not at war. In fact, they maintain one of the world's most open international borders, allowing Indian and Nepali citizens to cross freely without passports or visas. However, foreign nationals, including Americans, must still carry valid travel documents and pass through official immigration checkpoints. Authorities say Brown allegedly attempted to bypass those legal entry procedures. Indian security agencies are continuing to investigate Brown's identity, his travel claims, and the reason he allegedly attempted the unauthorized border crossing. The U.S. Embassy has been informed of the case.
