This anti-desertification technology, known as the "straw checkerboard sand barrier," originated in China and has since spread throughout the world. In 2023, I met Tang Xining, a 57-year-old scientist who has been fighting desertification in Ningxia for more than 30 years. He is the third-generation Chinese scientist to employ the "straw checkerboard sand barrier". More than 487 square kilometers of land have been spared from desertification because to his efforts. He has modernized the method using machines and other cutting-edge technology, earning five patents. The original "straw checkerboard sand barrier" only kept 25% of the desert's grass alive, whereas the new technique keeps almost 75% of the plants thriving. He showed me how to make a "straw checkerboard sand barrier" the old-fashioned way. The straw checkerboard sand barriers were originally created for building the desert section of the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway. Researchers discovered that straws arranged in a checkerboard pattern on the desert floor can effectively control the movement of sand dunes. In 1955, the Chinese Academy of Sciences established China’s first comprehensive observation station in Shapotou; and then the following year, the country’s first specialized sand-break forest was launched. After numerous failures and explorations, straw checkerboard sand barriers were adopted as the main method to deal with moving sand when the railway opened. The method was applauded by experts from both home and abroad at the United Nations Conference on Desertification (UNCOD) in Nairobi in 1977. Since then, foreign experts and personnel came one after another to Shapotou to learn the unique method. In China, the fight against desertification and for environmental conservation began with the deployment of straw checkerboard sand barriers.

All these fruits are being produced in Kaduna. The stickers on the apples are just there to give the impression that they are imported. Apples are currently in season and are being sold in bulk and hawked in wheelbarrows. That's how abundant and affordable they are here. The video showing a small grapevine in a backyard is just a setup to provide shade for goats and chickens to retire to after a long day of grazing, but the farmers have a larger plantations in the farming area. The last video is a guava field occupying about 2.5 hectares where 3m naira worth of guavas are being sold WEEKLY once the rain starts until tye end of the rainy season. This is because the farmers there pay little attention to irrigation. For the grapes, I couldn't get a picture of them being hawked in wheelbarrows as they are currently out of season but would be back for a second harvest in the next two months. I came across a post where someone mentioned buying grapes from a wheelbarrow vendor, and it sounds like a myth to a food number of the people in the south... For those who were in my DM asking for sources to buy grapes in large quantities in the north, just get your cash ready, as the 2nd harvest season will soon be,in the next two months. Nigeria is blessed.

A Unique Tradition from Rural Czechia An old custom known as “Marching Judas” has survived in only a few villages in eastern Czechia. The oldest teenage boy in the village dresses up as “Straw Judas,” symbolizing Judas Iscariot. He then leads a procession where children go from door to door, singing songs and receiving sweets, eggs, and money from villagers — all collected in a cart pulled by Judas. At the end of the day, after visiting every household, the children lead Judas to a hill or field outside the village, where he is stripped of his costume. The straw outfit is ceremonially burned, and the donations collected in the cart are shared equally among the participants.

We are still on the subject of refreshments 🧊 An extremely fresh fruit salad 🥭🍇🍎🍌with cream & mango juice🥤 felt like a peace of heaven under this heat 🥵 I even surprised myself with taste, and the kids seconded that 😁 Gaza is known for growing citrus fruits, grapes, figs, strawberries & watermelons. Believe me when I say that the richness of taste in any of them is nothing that you ever tasted! Can’t wait till someday I go back home and make you fruit salad out of our locally grown exquisite fruits

I just took a quick trip down to one of the well known “asylum seeker” hotels in Niagara Falls Ontario, to see if they were in fact evicted at the end of September, as the Canadian Government had ordered. Seems as though business is as usual. I noticed some patched up drywall and the smell of fresh paint in the hallways. When I looked out the window, while inspecting the floors for any sign of “migrants”, I noticed in the parking lot below me were containers, and people loading a copious amount of mattresses into a U-Haul. Seems as though the “migrants” have vacated the hotel, which begs the question, where did they go?

Theatrical modern cuisine is the worst thing to ever happen to fine dining. As someone who will travel specifically for food, it's an insult. I'm thoroughly convinced the chefs are all just pulling an elaborate prank on their customers and seeing how ridiculous they can get while still charging a fortune. I don't want an interactive dining experience outside of me cutting and eating the food. I don't want a deconstructed ice cream sundae or peeled grapes. Serve me a meal made with fresh, high-quality ingredients with balanced flavors. I'm not impressed that you have a Pacojet in the kitchen.
