🇺🇸 An Artemis astronaut just revealed the capsule returned with serious visible charring on its heat shield. That’s the part literally designed to burn away and protect everything else a raw reminder of how brutal reentry really is. 'Normal wear and tear'... but make it space. Source: Reuters

Elon Musk on reusable heat shield and Mars reentry: — No one has created a truly reusable orbital heat shield before — Reentry involves extreme heat and pressure — very hard to withstand — Only advanced ceramics and carbon-based materials can survive it — SpaceX aims to make the first fully reusable, reliable orbital heat shield... difficult but physically achievable — CO₂ plasma releases free oxygen, which can burn the heat shield — Testing is done in CO₂ to ensure it works for both Earth and Mars

🚨 NASA WARNS ARTEMIS II FACES A HIDDEN THREAT — FLAMMABLE ASTRONAUT FARTS COULD BUILD UP INSIDE ORION A science expert just said something on television that NASA doesn’t usually say out loud… Astronauts fart in space. And inside the Orion spacecraft… space farts don’t just disappear. Those fumes can actually be flammable. • Farts release methane + hydrogen in a sealed capsule • Both gases can build up in a confined environment • NASA studied astronaut diets for YEARS to reduce how much they fart • Apollo recordings caught crews complaining about how brutal it got inside Now Artemis II is about to test this again. Yes, Orion has air scrubbers… but in a small capsule, with multiple astronauts, for days… It doesn’t just go away. It builds. And in space, there’s nowhere to escape it. How bad do you think it actually gets inside that capsule?

Phoenix is a donut-shaped space capsule made by Germany’s Atmos Space Cargo. It has an inflatable heat shield and can carry payloads back from space to Earth. The capsule completed one orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 and safely splashed down near Brazil on April 23, 2025.

How Starship Gets Its Heat Shield 🛡️🚀 | Thousands of Tiles, One Mission The answer is a thermal protection system made of thousands of black hexagonal heat-shield tiles. Each tile is inspected, precisely aligned, and installed on Starship’s windward side to help reduce the intense heat generated during reentry.

Stoke Space is developing a fully reusable rocket designed to reuse both its first and second stages. The first stage lands like Falcon 9, while the second stage returns to Earth after delivering its payload using a unique engine with 30 thrust chambers. Its actively cooled heat shield uses cryogenic fuel to protect the rocket during the intense heat of re-entry.

Europe is getting serious about space. The Exploration Company just completed a major drop test of its reusable Nix space capsule, designed to carry cargo (and eventually astronauts) to low Earth orbit. The capsule was lifted by a Chinook helicopter to 9,100 feet before testing its parachute deployment sequence. Watching a future spacecraft dangling from a military helicopter is pretty cool. Writer: Lynn

Why doesn't SpaceX just use the Raptor engines to brake before hitting the atmosphere?" It's the most common question under every Starship reentry stream. It sounds like a common-sense solution to save the heat shield tiles. But trying to slow down using fuel instead of atmospheric drag introduces a brutal physics trap. To completely cancel out orbital velocity using raw engine thrust, Starship would need to carry an impossible amount of weight. Here is exactly why the Rocket Equation makes a "cool reentry" mathematically impossible: 👇#spacex #starship #reentry #raptor

Only a few hours until the very first #Artemis mission that carries humans into space, father than ever before. How important is international cooperation in this amazing endeavour, and what is the role of Europe in this? By building and providing the European Service Module, the element that powers the spacecraft and supplies air, water, electricity, and propulsion, Europe will travel around the Moon with the Artemis II astronauts. It’s a powerful reminder that exploration has no borders. When we go not just as nations, but as humanity to explore our eighth continent, we can achieve big things. Amazing to think that on one of the upcoming missions, a European astronaut will be part of the crew. European Space Agency European Space Agencyspaceflight NASA Artemis

🚨 BREAKING: Artemis II has just been given the GO to execute the RETURN BURN back to Earth — set to reenter the atmosphere at nearly 25,000 MPH The crucial HEAT SHIELD will keep them safe 🇺🇸 1. The crew module will separate and thrusters will adjust Orion for reentry 2. Heat shield withstands 5,000 degrees F and communications will black out for a few minutes 3. Parachutes deploy, speed reduces to 19 MPH 4. SPLASH DOWN and recovery team assists the crew Splashdown off the coast of California!

🇺🇸Artemis II is now racing toward the Moon after a flawless launch from Kennedy Space Center. The crew completed the critical trans-lunar injection burn, sending Orion out of Earth orbit on a free-return trajectory that will swing around the far side of the Moon using lunar gravity as a natural slingshot. The most dangerous phase comes on day 10 when the capsule slams back into Earth’s atmosphere at 25,000 miles per hour, protected only by its heat shield that must survive temperatures near 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit before parachutes slow it for a splashdown off San Diego. 🇨🇳 CHINESE ASTRONAUTS LAND SAFELY AFTER SPACE JUNK SCARE A piece of space debris hit China’s Shenzhou-20 capsule, cracking a window and grounding the spacecraft. The 3 astronauts were supposed to land 9 days earlier but had to switch to a backup spacecraft mid-orbit. The damaged capsule is staying up there to run tests, but now the new crew has no ride home. Until China launches another escape pod, they’re stuck on the space station with no exit. Space junk is piling up, and everyone’s dodging it, from China to SpaceX to the ISS. An astronaut demonstrates how honey behaves in space. In a 2019 experiment, Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques showed how honey behaves in space with almost no gravity. Instead of dripping down like it does on Earth, the thick honey stretched and stayed connected between the container and its lid, showing how liquids can act differently in microgravity. Yet another generational statement from the Artemis II crew 🗣️ During Artemis II, astronaut Victor Glover shared a view from deep space, seeing Earth as one fragile, unified world. He said space is amazing, but life on Earth is just as special and reminded everyone to appreciate it and come together, especially around Easter. [🎥: via/ NASA]

Elon: Raptor 3 skips the base heat shield entirely “Raptor 3 is designed to require no base heat shield, saving a lot of mass on the bottom and actually improving reliability. So that if, for example, there is a small fuel leak from the Raptor engine, it will simply leak into the existing flaming plasma and not really matter.”
