In 1996 when Jamiroquai filmed their VIRTUAL INSANITY music video, lead singer Jay Kay had literally no idea in which direction the floor would shift, improvising every single one of his dance moves to coincide the set. In fact, it wasn't the floor at all moving, but rather the set walls shifting in all directions with furniture locked in place and released at random times to only give the feeling that the floor was shifting. Not only because I was so excited about this record, but I had fallen off my horse 6 weeks before the shoot for the video. I had broken 9 bones in my body, including my collarbone , shoulder blade, and 6 ribs.!!With many prayers and lots of rehab. I somehow managed to make a video that celebrates Dance! I don’t even know how I lifted my left arm. Miracles do happen. 🙏🏼

Nicholas Brothers in the 1940 film “Down Argentine Way”. Director Irving Cummings at the time had considered their dancing scene too long. However, it was thanks to dance director Nick Castle - imploring Cummings to the contrary insisting the piece remain uncut with no slice on the cutting room floor. I, for one, imagine unnecessary horror of butchering fine work as theirs. It was tested at the initial screening and rapturously met with thunderous - and incessant applause that they were surprisingly forced to rewind the film for replay. The film was the first in an ongoing series of Latin American themed movies becoming popular in the ‘40s. One of the many things which distinguished this particular performance from their others was the duo were to dance to Latin inspired music fused with American tap dancing. Giving subtle cultural interlay between cultures. The two produce percussive taps to the Latin rhythms with rhythmic - and music note values considerably faster than the very music itself. The precision and clarity of the taps are astounding. Previously the duo danced to developing jazz idioms of the time - but this performance showcasing their ability to dance to any kind of music while making it uniquely their own. From a technical perspective there are several kinds of new inventive steps - and of a novel kind as both display techniques and also variations of these steps from shuffles, to slides, repeated taps with the same foot - which is incredibly difficult to perform. This is why in technical piano playing repeated notes can be a nightmare to execute - but both perform repeated taps with accurate musicality and control making the tap composition flawless. We see side foot taps too where the outer parts of the foot’s edge are used to create taps. This is simply virtuosity. With additional forward flips into splits, and mesmerising floor work, and incredible base strength, and muscular power in leg muscle support. The leaps over the handkerchief directly into the splits are a wonder. This duo could match anything Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire ever did.

The Berry Brothers, the sensational flash tap and acrobatics dance team that found fame in nightclubs, stage and film, comprised three blood brothers, Ananias, James, and Warren. Encouraged by their mother, they perfected their unique dance style from from the eccentric dancer Henry Wessels, who game them their only formal lessons. Their father, who was an extremely religious man and did not at first approve of their performance aspirations, eventually relented and taught them the Cake Walk and the Prancing Strut. It's not shocking that some of these flash dancers had hip problems later in life. The Brothers performed for over 30 years together were two of them unfortunately passed away before they were 55. Warren, the youngest, lived on until he was 74.

Even though Gaga is probably frustrated that the show didn’t unfold the way she envisions it as an artist, I think it was a truly memorable experience for us fans. It’s those small details, mistakes, and unexpected moments that make each show different from the last and create unique memories for the audience. This final show may not have had the Garden of Eden dance break or two piano surprise songs, but it gave us a more human Gaga. One who deeply cares about her dancers and her audience, and who feels closer to us because of it. And finally, after five years, we were able to witness the first ever kind of performance of Rain On Me exactly the way it was meant to happen: in the rain. It was a beautiful last show for the 2025 tour. Thank you Gaga! 🖤
