Visvesvaraya, whose engineering vision after Hyderabad's catastrophic 1908 Musi flood remains a powerful lesson in disaster resilience. The flood devastated Hyderabad, with historical estimates placing the loss of life at around 10,000–15,000 people. Sir M. Visvesvaraya was subsequently engaged by the Nizam's Government to study the disaster and develop solutions for flood protection and city drainage. His recommendations included upstream storage reservoirs that ultimately resulted in Osman Sagar (1920) and Himayat Sagar (1927), together with systematic improvements to Hyderabad's drainage and sewerage infrastructuure. As Indian cities confront extreme rainfall, urban flooding, sewage pollution, water scarcity and climate change, we need the same philosophy with today's technologies: Hyderabad's history proves that engineering excellence is not measured only by structures—it is measured by the lives, cities and generations those structures protect.
