👊🏼An important reminder, many seem to be “conveniently” forgetting. 👇🏼 The Budapest Memorandum, was given as “security guarantees” to Ukraine in 1994, for which Ukraine gave up a variety of weapons, including their nuclear arsenal, (which was the third-largest nuclear arsenal in the world) & dozens of jets. For... that, Ukraine was given “security guarantees”, assurances that were to secure Ukrainian sovereignty, and the independence of Ukraine. Security assurances without enforcement are simply words on paper, another “pinky promise”. Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons in exchange for written promises. Promises that means absolutely nothing to the aggressors, and clearly is not enforced by the allies when red lines are crossed. Ukraine has all reason to be skeptical to such security guarantees, because they are the ones who have had to fight alone, again & again, against the same aggressor, while the enforcers of the guarantees did absolutely nothing to assist and, again & again, completely ignored russias dishonesty, crimes, violations and cruelty. To those who still don’t understand: how unjust, and frankly, utterly tone-deaf, it is to ask the victims of this war, those under constant attack and bombardment, to make compromises in exchange for something they have already learned cannot be relied upon, while nothing is demanded of the actual aggressor — whose violations and crimes are still ignored and go unpunished, with zero consequences — I hope this helps you understand that: Justice cannot begin by asking the victim to surrender! Sovereignty is not a bargaining chip. And more than anything, I hope this helps you understand why Ukraine will never again mistake assurances for protection. Ukraine shall not disarm itself twice! Stop asking the people defending their nation to; give in & give up, when that is exactly what we should be pressuring & demanding of the aggressors!show more

President Macron: When we speak about security guarantees, we speak about the whole security of the European continent and this is why we are all united here with Ukraine on this matter... And in order to have such a long-standing peace for Ukraine and for the whole continent, we do need the security guarantees. And the first one is clearly a credible Ukrainian army for the years and decades to come. And the second one is our own commitments, all of us. You can be sure that Europeans are very lucid about the fact that they have their fair share in the security guarantees for Ukraine, but their own security is clearly at stake in this situation.

On June 1, 1996, the last nuclear missiles were brought from Ukraine into Russia. The next day, Ukraine has lost its status of a nuclear state after signing the Budapest Memorandum. We cannot tell any country to give up their territory. And this is what the Fidesz politicians said. Then I would like to ask them: What would you do if Russia attacked Hungary? Which Hungarian counties would you be willing to give up? Ukraine should receive security guarantees and territorial guarantees that can be observed and kept. Ukraine, under the Budapest Memorandum, gave up its nuclear arsenal for guarantees, but those guarantees were violated repeatedly by Russia."🔚 This is a good starting point. Hopefully, the relationship between our countries can be mended from here. I'm really looking forward to having sane neighbors.

Russia is the one invading, bombing cities, killing women and children, and annexing Ukrainian land. Asking Ukraine to trust Russia for security is like asking an arsonist to join the fire department that’s supposed to protect your house. Guarantees are meant to deter the aggressor. If the aggressor is part of the guarantee, there’s no real consequence for breaking the deal — because they’d be policing themselves. It's obvious what's happening here. By proposing this, Russia is trying to look cooperative while actually gutting the effectiveness of any security deal. It shifts blame and puts Ukraine in an impossible position.

We are working with the United States to ensure that Ukraine still can receive the necessary number of Patriot systems. This is not an easy task, but it is one of the security guarantees for Ukraine – and it will work in the long term. In Washington, I spoke with defense companies that produce Patriots and other weapons we need. The willingness to work with Ukraine is fully sufficient – Ukraine is trusted. It is important that there be enough support for this at the political level in Washington.
