I love how we pay £3.3 million extra a year to the BBC to pay for a department whose sole function is to confirm that their journalists are actually backing their reporting with evidence. We used to just call that 'journalism'.

Here’s an idea. If the IRGC and clerics had treated their people better, Trump would be extremely unlikely to try this. Not out of empathy but because if you have consent of the governed, there would be legitimacy and it makes invasions very difficult. But to have treated their people better, it would mean that the money given by Obama would have been sent on improving people’s lives, and not on getting nukes, and not on paying for proxy armies like Hamas, hezbollah, Houthis. In a way Obama did have a workable idea. Unfortunately he was dealing with assh*les. And that’s why what Obama did was stupid. If he was dealing with rational people with any decency, the world would have been very different.
