This contrast beautifully with the final esprit du corps. Where it's clear that Martinaise has not given up yet. And of course nothing he tried or did could make a difference, he tried it all on his lonesome.

Love this read. Despite it being wrong in the face of what you see around Martinaise, it's such a good character who has grown so bitter and tired of trying by himself after an extreme trauma.
