An Undertaker-type character could never work in today’s WWE 😭 He was literally using supernatural powers and crazy stuff like that, which worked back in the day, but it would be impossible to make it work in today’s WWE. People would just make fun of it 😂

There is a Vampire looking guy with 10 midgets cursing people an fans are eating it up like crazy. But the Undertaker couldn't work today? Ya ok....

Except the undertaker was believable and didnt do this stunt and jump on social media the same night to show backstage pics

It worked for Mark Calaway because of his commitment to character for 30+ years, his consistently improving workrate, he’s larger than a lot of people, and his tenure as a long-term performer in WWE

Well for such character to work nowadays, the aure like undertaker is needed which is nearly impossible to recreate in today's time.

They keep trying. Somehow The Fiend was successful and that was not too long ago.

Undertaker BACK THEN was a gimmick that shouldn't have worked. He was the exception not the rule. Brian Lee aka Chainz proved what happened when you try to have someone else do it. This post is full of ignorance and "your weren't there" energy

You need to have aura like The Undertaker to make it work, today's wannabes can never match this

Finn Balor was their best bet with the whole demon thing but leave it to wwe to fumble it up

I dunno. Danhausen and his curses are completely over with the fans.

I have to disagree. If the Undertaker was removed from the past, and a young Undertaker debuted today, fans would love it just as much now as we did then.

It was dumb back then too. But the internet wasn’t really a thing yet. And he was a big guy who could put on great match. Had his wrestling abilities been anything less he would have been laughed out of the WWF…

It would work as long as it’s kept as protected as it was before. Supernatural gimmicks need to be superprotected, otherwise whats the point of havin those powers if theyre just about as mortal &beatable as everybody else? The Undertaker knew how to tell a story in the ring too.

I'm old enough to remember how this was looked down upon back then too. Considered childish, unbelievable, etc. The only thing that changed is that the people that liked it then grew up and still like it now. Same is going to happen to the dumb stuff today in 20 years.

Respectfully, I’d disagree a little. The character isn’t the issue. The Fiend was was good at peak. I think WWE creative cannot put together anything comparable. When Bo was in Pierce office in regular clothes the pop was crazy, for them to do nothing with it. They cnt create.

That’s why I can’t get on board with the Danhausen project they’re pushing on us. It’s not clicking with me at all. I think it’s cheesy AF. I also wasn’t a fan of the Wyatt 6 push either. Let Bray’s iconic character and aura be remembered with him. They just couldn’t do it like Bray and it fell flat imo

@DanhausenAD seems to be doing fine, even if it’s comedic mostly. People are buying in.

This is the dumbest opinion I've heard so far this year, you think people weren't mocking it back then? So many people found it stupid, just like danhausen today. Your just one of the people that doesn't like it

It would work bro, the person doing it just have to be huge and look like he could believable kill you just like Kane, undertaker and the Wyatt family. !! Aliester black body type is not scary ! Same with uncle howdy ! And his team (aside Rowan tho)

I agree it wouldn't work but not for the reasons mentioned. People have said for decades now it shouldn't have worked back in 1990! The only reason it did and lasted was because of Mark Calaway. HE made it work. He knew HOW to make it work. No one today would have a clue.

It could work, and did because it was dark. Thing with like Danhausen is he is a joke to begin with. The only reason it wouldn't work today is because they try to act like this is a "real sport" I'd welcome something like Ministry of Darkness again

They would have to make the character some type of non gender, fluid garbage to appeal to the masses.

So I guess Broken Matt Hardy doesn't count? The gimmick that included teleportation, reincarnation, supernatural lake powers, speaking in ancient voices, drones named Vanguard-1, etc. That gimmick got massively over in the modern internet era. I also guess Danhausen doesn't count? The wrestler who goes around cursing people. I also guess the Fiend doesn't count too? This one alone disproves the entire argument. The Fiend was insanely over in the modern era. The problem wasn’t the gimmick. The problem was WWE’s booking collapsing under its own nonsense. The difference between now and Undertaker’s era is that back then, wrestling openly embraced comic book logic. Today, fans are more meta-aware and cynical. So modern supernatural gimmicks usually work best when they commit 100% to the bit, have strong aesthetics, avoid cheesy fake lightning every week, and blur the line instead of going full cartoon constantly. Undertaker himself evolved this way. 90s Undertaker was basically a live-action comic book villain with lightning powers. Late career Undertaker became more grounded and aura based. So could a supernatural gimmick work today? Yes. Absolutely. Could 1994 Undertaker exactly as is work today? Probably not without adaptation. I only listed 3, there's so many more like Su Yung, Rosemary, Malakai/Aleister Black, Abadon, The Boogeyman, Jeff Hardy as Willow, and more. The audience never stopped liking larger than life mythic characters. They stopped liking bad writing and fake looking production.

You’d be surprised. Reigns is a mafia don. Randy is a psychotic killer. You forget that the product isn’t made for us primarily, it’s made for kids. We just keep liking it because we liked when we were kids. Just about anything can work if the writing and presentation is strong.

You have to make it believable, you got to have that aura. Undertaker doing these things will work even today, but imagine Mason Rook doing that. People will start rioting inside the stadium. Looks and intimidation matters.
