Carlton Neal Johnson II, 35, had a lengthy record plus recent violent/threatening behavior at the apartment. Court history reported so far: • 34 separate criminal cases in the Twin Cities area (Star Tribune). • Two assault charges tied to domestic incidents. • Two misdemeanor drug cases. • 2018 case: Accused of assaulting a sibling. Reports say he hinted he had a gun and was “not afraid to shoot people in the face.” He pleaded guilty to destruction of property (denied the assault), served 4 days in jail, and got probation. A judge commented that he appeared to have anger issues. 2026 apartment incidents (civil eviction case, not new criminal convictions yet): • March 2026: Alleged assault of another resident at Loring Towers / Shoreline Plaza. • June 2026: Multiple reports of WALKING THE PROPERTY WITH A FIREARM VISIBLE entering the management office while displaying it, flashing the gun on the sidewalk, lifting his shirt to show it to a security officer, and telling residents he would “KILL SOMEONE.” • Building management filed to evict him; a court hearing was set for Sept. 11. He had been given a SECOND CHANCE earlier if he kept the gun concealed. Some reports say he was actually evicted the day of the shooting. He “claimed” in court papers that he had a valid permit to carry. Police said they were already “familiar with who this individual was.” Neighbors also said he had talked in the days before the shooting about shooting an ex-girlfriend and property managers. 😡😡😡
