Animals discovered include: woolly mammoths, an extinct horse (Equus lenensis), prehistoric steppe bison (Bison priscus), sabertoothed cats, cave lions, and a dog-like wolf creature named Dogor that scientists are still testing.

The Milk Grotto is a cave near the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. According to ancient tradition, the Holy Family hid there while fleeing to Egypt to escape King Herod. It is said that while the Virgin Mary was nursing the infant Jesus, a few drops of milk fell onto the ground, turning the cave from pink to white. Pilgrims have long believed that powder taken from the walls of the cave has curative properties, especially for women struggling with infertility or difficulty breastfeeding. Video: Holger Klussmann

The divers who came to retrieve the bodies of the Italian divers are among the most experienced cave divers in the world. Two of them were involved in the infamous Plura Cave Incident. Patrik Grönqvist survived the Plura tragedy and later refused to leave his friend’s body inside the cave system. He returned into the cave with a small group of fellow divers on an extremely dangerous recovery mission. One of the divers who joined him was Sami Paakkarinen and he was also part of the Maldives recovery mission.
